IDAHO GIVES begins this week. It runs for 4 days April 29th – May 2nd. This is an opportunity to support your favorite local charity and explore other charities in your community.
I am intentional in many things and that applies double when giving to charity. I want to be sure my giving sees results.
Chris Gabriel in his book Wise Generosity encourages people to follow the 5Ps to be effective with their giving.
Proximity
The mission of a charity needs to resonate with your own values. What are you passionate about? animals, children, environment, veterans…? The list of charities is endless for the causes you can support.
Proximity is good in being geographically near to the charity. Being able to visit a charity provides more awareness of the needs. And it can provide more accountability for the charity.
Proportion
Are you giving out of your leftovers or your abundance?
- Tin – giving your leftovers – spare change. Or clearing clutter from your house and giving it to a thrift store.
- Golden Giving – giving an amount that fits comfortably in your budget. You won’t be doing without any conveniences.
- Diamond Giving – giving that is more sacrificial; you are giving the monies you saved for a vacation to a cause.
Production
A velocity of giving. “A virtuous cycle of giving reinforces more giving which produces more giving.” (Wise Generosity by Chris Gabriel)
A charity may ask you to sponsor a child in a foreign country. You see the difference you are making for one child and you decide to support a second child with the program.
Power
“Powerful giving comes at the intersection of passion, opportunity, and impact.” (Wise Generosity by Chris Gabriel)
Kenneth Yeung, a tea importer, became aware of the plight of disabled orphans in China. He considered quitting his business to help meet this need. Instead, he leveraged his business by sharing photos of the children to start a foundation for the adoption of orphans.
Present
Just as interest compounds cumulatively, generosity compounds exponentially.
Don’t wait to start giving. It’s contagious.
The Idaho Nonprofit Center began the program Idaho Gives. It is a powerful event that supports local communities and organizations all across Idaho. Share with us on Facebook what charity you gave to.
